DEWALT LAUNCHES SITE-PRO™ MODULAR GUARDING SYSTEM
Press Release
– Adjustable, Tool-Free Guard System for Table Saws Provides Increased Visibility –
September 2008 – DEWALT, a leading manufacturer of industrial power tools, announced the launch of the Site-Pro™ Modular Guarding System for all portable DEWALT table saws including the DW744X, DW744XRS and DW745. The Site-Pro™ Modular Guarding System is a three-part, modular system that includes a rise and fall riving knife, anti-kickback pawls and top guard. This tool-free, adjustable guard system provides contractors with an easy-to-use blade guard that offers a clear line of sight when making cuts, and minimizes installation and removal of guard components to 30 seconds or less.
The tool-free riving knife helps to reduce the occurrence of kickback and allows users to easily change riving knives in order to accommodate for various blade thicknesses. Additionally, the riving knife can be situated in two different positions for making through cuts and non-through cuts. A spring-loaded lock helps users quickly find the detents for each position. There are two riving knife options – the first riving knife included with DEWALT table saws is 2.2MM thick and is compatible with 10” blades having a 2.4MM minimum kerf width and 1.7MM body thickness. This will accommodate both DEWALT construction and precision trim blades. A second, thicker riving knife, DW7442, is 2.8MM thick and is available as an accessory that is compatible with 10” blades having a 3.0MM minimum kerf and 2.5MM maximum body thickness. This will accommodate most woodworking blades, but the user should confirm plate and kerf measurements with each blade manufacturer.
Working in tandem with the riving knife to reduce kickback, the tool-free anti-kickback pawls enable users to quickly make adjustments for various applications. The new top guard design offers users enhanced visibility and independent side guard movement for better overall performance. DEWALT has also added a tool-free throat plate which will allow for easy blade removal and riving knife adjustments.
Additionally, on-board storage is provided for easy tool transportation and quick access to the Site-Pro™ guarding components and push stick when they are not in use.

DEWALT's Multi-Base Router Kit Gets It Right
Review from page 92 in October 2002 issue of WOOD
under "Shop-Proven Products."
I have a personal rule against buying multi-anything
tools because each function typically compromises the others. DEWALT's new DW618PK multi-base router kit is an exception to the rule.
The heart of the system is the fixed-base DW618K,
boasting soft-grip handles and a 2-hp, soft-start, electronic
variable-speed motor. That removable motor also snaps into a matching
plunge base or D-handle base. I cut some hefty mortises using the
plunge base and detected no hint of strain from the machine.
Instead of rotating the motor in the fixed base to
adjust the height, the DW618K's twist ring smoothly threads the motor
up and down without rotating it. That means the power switch stays in
one place: within easy reach of your thumb. In a thoughtful nod to
left-handed users, DEWALT
engineers designed the motor so you also can mount it with the switch
on the left side.
Speaking of user-friendly engineering, the DW618K's
detachable power cord makes the changeover to the D-handle base
hassle-free. Simply twist the base of the cord to remove it from the
motor, plug it into the base on the handle, then plug the D-handle's
short cord into the motor, as shown above.
The true test of a multi-base kit is its plunge base,
and this one proved fluid-smooth and steady. It also has
through-the-plunge-post dust collection, which effectively cleared the
chips from even deep mortises. My only gripe about the plunge base is
that the beefy depth-stop rod hides a fair amount of the depth scale.
Almost as impressive as the performance is the number of
accessories that come with the DW618PK. In addition to the fixed and
plunge bases, the $250 kit includes a carrying case, 1/4" and 1/2"
self-releasing collets, two clear Lexan subbases (one that accepts
Porter-Cable-style guide bushings, and one with a larger 2-1/2" bit
opening), and a neat concentricity tool--the cone-shaped gadget in the
foreground of the photo--that centers the subbase (or your router table
insert plate) over the collet.

DeWalt Cordless Battery and Chargers
Cordless
Best Practices for Long Battery Pack Life
When using the DEWALT batteries and chargers, the batteries can last longer than double many of our competitors. To ensure the maximum life out of a battery pack there are some best practices which must be followed as general maintenance for Nickel Cadmium Batteries.
1. The battery will perform best if it is charged at room temperature. Do not charge in temperatures below 40 F or above 105 F. Under these conditions, the battery will not take a full charge, and may be permanently damaged.
2. If the battery is hot, let the it sit out of the charger for a least 2 hours until the battery is at room temperature. Otherwise, immediately place the battery pack in the charger.
3. Do not try to discharge the battery beyond the point where the tool no longer performs with the power and torque needed for the job, because it may cause permanent damage which will prevent the battery from taking a full charge.
Do not tape trigger on the tool to discharge the battery
4. Store the battery in a cool, dry place. If temperatures exceed 120F, it may reduce the battery life.
5. Periodically charge the battery overnight to take full advantage of the 3-Stage Charging System for optimum runtime and battery life.
Check out the Batteries and Chargers FAQs for more tips on maximize your battery.

Making the Tenoning Platform
By Bill Hylton
The tenoning platform is simple to make, and you will be able to screw one together in just a few minutes.
It is so easy to make, in fact, that you may just toss it after a job is completed. Next tenoning job, you’ll just make a new one. You can easily tailor the jig to a special job. Make it wide enough to accommodate two workpieces, for example.
1. Cut the parts. Five parts is all you need, and you will probably find the stock for them in your scrap collection. The parts aren’t big, and they don’t need to look good.
The two platforms must be flat, and it is a whole lot easier to assemble the jig if they also are square. I favor MDF for these jigs because it has a good edge. It is crisp, free of voids, and won’t develop washboard ripples after a few passes.
The fences must be straight. They should be slightly thinner than the stock you are going to cut tenons on. By making the fences thinner than the working stock, you ensure that the platform rests on the work, not the fences.
The work stop should be no thicker than the fences. Its end must be square.
2. Screw the platforms to the fence. Getting the main platform joined to the fence at a perfect right angle is the most critical part of the entire procedure. Align the platform edge flush with the edge of a fence piece. Drill a countersunk pilot hole, and drive a screw, setting its head below the platform surface. Then use a square to set the guiding edge of the platform at right angles to the fence, pivoting the pieces on that first screw as necessary. Clamp the parts together when they are perfectly square. Drive two more screws.
Mount the platform to the second fence in the same way.
Position and attach the support platform next. An easy way to set it is to butt a 3-in.-wide scrap against the main platform and set the support platform against the scrap’s parallel edge. Flush up the ends, and screw the platform in place.
Sand the edges around the screwheads, to ensure the entire surface is flat. Dust it, and apply paste wax to the platforms.
3. Mount the stop. This is usually job-specific. You lay out one shoulder of the tenon you want to cut, then clamp the marked piece in the jig, with the main platform’s edge dead on the layout line. Putt the stop against the end of the work and drill pilot holes and drive two screw through the support platform into the stop.
Now the tenoning platform is ready for use.
